Izumo, located in Shimane prefecture, is said to be a land of myths, known for Izumo Oyashiro, a shrine for the deity protecting the country. 2012 marks the 1300th year of the compilation of Kojiki, which records the mythical legends related to Izumo and the construction of Izumo Oyashiro.

On the occasion of these events an exhibition ‘Treasures from Sacred Izumo’ is held at Tokyo National Museum from October 10th.

The exhibition is separated into displays of Izumo Oyashiro, the oldest shrine in Japan holding a distinguished history, and the Shimane jewels. All exhibition pieces are closely associated with each other and reveal a history dating back to the times of mythological Japan.
