The walking course in Kagurazaka where there are many ups and downs starts at Kagurazaka Station. With some narrow stone pavement, the there are some places that remind you of the old times. The walking distance is not that long therefore it is an easy place to stroll around with a map in one hand.

First is the main street “Kagurazaka-dori”. There are many restaurants and shops along this road.

Kagurazaka Wakamiya Hachiman Jinja is a shrine that Yoritomo Minamoto built. Today, it is in the center of the residential area but the hill around the area used to be the precincts of the shrine.

As you go up Kagurazaka-dori, you will soon find Akagi Jinja. It is famous for Kengo Kuma, a world known architect, produced the shrine. It has become a new type of shrine introducing a original shrine.

There is a mansion and café in the premises of Akagi Jinja.

Next is Sodesurizaka. The name originates to the fact that people’s sleeves rubbing against each other’s due to the narrow road (“Sodesuri” means rubbing sleeves). Be careful when you pass by another person.

There is a Koyo Ozaki’s remain of old resident as you go up the slope. The house was burned down during the war. But his posthumous haiku is preserved here.

Going back to Kagurazaka-dori and back towards Kagurazaka Station, you will see Zenkoku-ji on your right. It is said to be the birthplace of temple festival and there are many people visiting even till today.

A statue of tiger offered by local people in 1848. The style is different from the guardian dog at Akagi Jinja.

As you walk into a small road from Zenkoku-ji, you will reach a place that symbolizes Kagurazaka, the Hyogo Yokocho. The narrow stone pavement is a popular place for shooting dramas.

There is an inn called “Wakana”, where many famous writers stayed in Hyogo Yokocho. There are total of five rooms. During their stay, many of them wrote masterpieces.

On the contrast from Akagi Jinja, Tsukudo Hachiman Jinja has the oldest stone torii gate in the ward.

The torii gate at the entrance is it. The time seems to slow down here. In spring, sukura will blossom beautifully.

Once again, we go back to the main street. There are over fifty restaurants at Honta Yokocho. This street is for those who love to eat with variety of restaurants from cafes to bars.

Geisha Shinmichi is near Honta Yokocho. The name came from the fact that this street used to have high-class Japanese restaurant on both sides and there were many geisha using this street. Today, new buildings stand, leaving no clue of the old days.

The time flows slowly in the lanes in Kagurazaka. There are many interesting places within the short courses. However, be careful when crossing the main street in Kagurazaka since there are many cars passing by throughout the day.
