During Edo period (around 16AC) through Meiji period (around 19AC), it is said that there were chrysanthemum dolls being made in Dangozaka. In 1984, the chrysanthemum dolls were reproduced as Yanaka Chrysantehmum Festival and this year, it is the 27th time of holding the event.

In Japan, the chrysanthemum is used for the arms of Imperial Household, badge of Metropolitan Police Department and a member of the Diet, cover of a passport, and decoration. The national flower of Japan is sakura, however, saying sakura for spring and chrysanthemm for fall, both flowers symbolize Japan.

Yanaka Chrysanthemum Festival is held in Daien-ji Temple.

To get to Daien-ji, take Chiyoda Subway Line, get off at Chiyoda Station and walk for 7 minutes. This area is called Yanesen Area, combining Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi. It is a great walking place. Since there are many place to visit such as temples and shopping district, I highly recommend talking a day to stroll around this area.
