Enjoy a cup of carefully brewed genuine Japanese tea with something sweet. Japanese tea brewed at the café “Chacha no Ma”, between Omotesando and Harajuku, is almost overwhelming. The tea which waiter Taki Wata brews can be enjoyed with a meal and sweets, chosen to best match their flavours.

Today I picked a green tea from Shizuoka prefecture. First one has to savor the aroma, while the waiter carefully explains about the tea.

It is a must to see his skills as a waiter

First I enjoyed a cup of Susuri Tea (すすり茶), made by brewing high grade tea leaves in a container without a lid. Pouring lukewarm water into a shallow cup with tea leaves in it, the extract which seeps out of the condensed tea leaves is what is drank.

My first “Susuri Tea.” I was surprised by the flavour and aroma from just one cup.

The balance between sweets such as warabi mochi (bracken-starch rice cake – above) and brewed tea is extraordinary

A Japanese style parfait (includes azuki beans, rice dumplings, hand roasted agar, and warabi mochi). Ice cream flavors are maccha (green tea), black sugar, black sesame, and vanilla.

After the first cup, it is possible to choose different teas to drink

■Aromatic roasted green tea
At Chacha no Ma, tea leaves are roasted on the spot. When the aroma of roasted leaves starts to spread, they are ready to be used.

In order for customers to enjoy their time, staff members are enthusiastic and passionate when dealing with tea. How would you like to experience the depth of Japanese tea and enjoy the different forms they can take?
