The 2011 Sendai Earthquake and Tsunami will remain in history as one of the most disastrous tragedies. Although Japan has been facing the greatest difficulties, one can catch a glimpse of “Tasukeai (mutual help)” or “Gaman (endurance)”, the senses that have almost been lost in modern Japan. Please read the following, wishing that it may heal people.

An Israeli person tried to talk to me in Hebrew. I didn’t know what to do, but a Palestinian passing by interpreted for us. “Is Japan OK? I deeply pray for Japan”, said the Israeli. The handshake between the Israeli and the Palestinian made me smile and cry.

A kid was waiting in a line for the cashier. His turn was coming, but he paused awhile, then put his money into a collection box by the cash register and returned the candies to the shelves. The cashier said, “Thank you very much”. His voice was shaking.

When there is a blackout, there is someone who fixes it. When there is a water cutoff, there is also someone fixes it. Even when there is an accident in a nuclear power plant, there is someone who fixes it. When we are inside a house thinking “When the hell will things be OK?”, there is at the same time someone who is in dead cold working his ass off to fix everything.

Last night, when I was walking on my way home from college, I saw a woman in an already closed bakery giving out her bread for free. I was very much touched to see people like her who carried out what they can do even in a bustling situation. It was very heart-warming. There is still hope in Tokyo.

I saw a group of children saying “Thank you for running the trains yesterday”. The station staff member was crying. I was weeping.

My father will be dispatched tomorrow to assist his co-workers in the Fukushima nuclear power plants. He was supposed to retire six months later, but he volunteered for it. I almost cried when he told me. “How we handle this now will change the future of nuclear power plants. I’m filled with a sense of mission”. He doesn’t seem very reliable at home, but I have never been this much proud of my father. I pray for his safe return.

I am praying for Japan!
We are all family living in this only one earth.
I share the pain and keep shedding tears. But the hope is right around the corner.

A male announcer of NHK was reading out the news of the present condition of stricken areas in even tones. “A mother who could not breastfeed her baby due to stress managed to get some milk after queuing all night long to wait for a supermarket to open”, and then there was suddenly a moment of silence, like an accident. He soon recovered, and I figured out he had shed some tears. I was moved to tears.

“It’s really dark outside and I’ve never seen these stars so bright and beautiful.
People in Sendai, look up!”

@hirata_hironobu
My two-year-old son was putting on his shoes to leave the house. “I’m gonna arrest the earthquake!” Very encouraging with bravery and the sense of justice in this small body. Everyone, please do not give up.

Dear Everyone in Japan,
Please keep your kindness. Be nice to the weak, be helpful mutually, and don’t lose your sense of forgiveness. When you are anxious, so are people around you. This is our wish. We will not give up as we share the same feeling.

@rasuku
I walked my way home for four hours. Pathways were full of people, but they were all well organized and walked in silence. Shops like convenience stores were operating as normal. The infrastructure for the Internet withstood the earthquake. Facilities to accept those who couldn’t make their way home were open in every place. Railroads recovered and trains were operating all night long. This is a great country. It doesn’t matter how much GDP it earns.

@tadakatz
When I said to a station staff member in the Metro, “This must be a very tough time. I appreciate it”, he replied with a smile, “This is the time not to give up!” It was very touching.

Suntory made their vending machines work for free. Softbank opened their Wi-Fi spots to everyone. Everyone is holding out with all their effort, and people in overseas are impressed and cooperating. Japan is now a much stronger nation than what it was during the Great Hanshin Earthquake, when they were reluctant to accept foreign aids and to dispatch their Self-Defense Forces.

@copedy
An email from my Korean friend: “The world’s only nation being bombed. Also lost the war. Typhoons come every year. Earthquakes do come, too, and so do tsunamis. It’s a small island country, but Japan has always overcome these challenges. Don’t give up! Don’t!”. Oh, by the way, I’m weeping.
