Tohoku trip: 2nd day Hirosaki
Reading time: About 3 minutes
Tohoku trip: 2nd day HirosakiThe “Hirosaki park” is the most famous place for sakura that represents Japan. In 1715, the saplings of the sakura that were brought from Kyoto were the start. Now there are 260 sakura trees planted here.
A bright red bridge and sakura, and a castle tower are as beautiful as Japanese paintings.
On this day there were a lot of people enjoying the Ohanami.
Hirosaki is, after the Meiji period, put a lot of strength in education. They invited a lot of teachers from abroad, therefore there are a lot of Western style houses and churches built. Because there is enough time to go around all of the spots, I recommend walking slowly and exploring each and every one.
In the Catholic Hirosaki church, it is a church where you can observe and enjoy stained glass. A Romanesque style church was built in 1910.
In Japan Christian religion society Hirosaki church, it is a protestant church with a history of over 100 years. It is the oldest protestant church in Tohoku that was build based on the Notre dame church in Paris.
In the south side of the Hirosaki church, there is the former Hirosaki city library. The red octagon shaped dome is its guide. Its characteristics are the beautiful renaissance style look that was built in 1906, and there is also a miniature building in the back.
Former Toougijyuku-gaijin kyoushi kan (foreign teacher’s building) is the first private school in Aomori prefecture. It was built in 1901, and currently there is a café on the 1st floor.
The Aomori bank memorial is Aomori prefecture’s first bank. It was built in 1904 with a renaissance style look. Now it is a museum related to banks and money, you can also observe the buildings that are a mixture of Japanese and European styles.
The Fujita memorial is where you can catch a glimpse of the life the celebrities in the Taisho period were living. The atmosphere consists of the formal European styles second residences, and gardens. There is a café on the 1st floor that is built in. You can enjoy the coffee that uses the famous coffee shop in Hirosaki, and the apple tart.
The last tourist spot in Hirosaki is the Saishouin-gojyunoto. It is a five layered tower that is 31m in height built in 1667. The fact that it uses no nails is its uniqueness.
The site seeing in Hirosaki has finished, so we move back to Aomori. Tomorrow, the last day we explore Aomori.
