Tokaido 53 tsugi’s (name of a street) Shinagawa area is a prospered stage town. Once you get off at the station, the big group of skyscraper buildings leaves an impression; however if you walk a little further a town where you can experience the atmosphere of the Edo period appears. In the last years of the Tokugawa shogunate, it is also land that the hero Sakamoto Ryoma spent his time in his younger ages.

First when you get to Shinagawa station, lets have fun inside of the station. The Ecute Shinagawa within the Shinagawa station opened in October 2005, and reopened in 2011 April. From side dishes, Japanese semi-western style sweets, ice cream, everything is available so it is difficult making a decision, but that is the fun part.

When you walk straight out of Shinagawa station, Takanawa exit there is the Epson Shinagawa stadium. Here is a big amusement sport that opened in 2005, which has a lot of enjoyable spots such as aquariums, movies, bowling allies, Shinagawa Yoshimoto prince theatre, live halls, eating and drinking facilities. You can watch the dolphins show in the aquarium. It is opened until late at night.

Also going north from Shinagawa station Takanawa exit, under the Keikyu overpass lines the Shinatatsu ramen and donburi. 7 ramen shops, 5 donburi shops all are competing with each other. Please have the one dish that these masters make with their souls. It is possible to buy gifts at the Shinatatsu store.

The inner garden is a rest area for those that work in these buildings. In the Spring it is possible to enjoys the Sakuras as well.

Near the Higashi hatsuyama park is the Ramen Jiro Shinagawa store. At lunch time there is a long line of business men. Ramen Jiro is famous in the Kanto region for having many enthusiastic fans. It would be good to try this place at least once when coming to Shinagawa.

When you get out of Shinagawa station South port exit and keep walking north, you can see the Shinagawa shopping street that consist of Tokaido’s stage town where you can see that it was once prosperous. The history of the stage town, you can see the history of the strutting men of noble ideals during end of the Tokugawa shogunate from the stone monuments and the information bulletins.
Also what first come into site is the marks of the Dozou Sumo. Here is the mark of the “Sumoya” a Hatagoya that was used by the nobles such as Shinsaku Takasugi and Kogorou Katsura. Now it is a convenience store therefore you need to be extra careful when looking for it, for it is easy to miss.

This is the Dozou Sumo and stone monument that has now become a convenience store.

Close to there is the Shingawa-ura boat wait, that is still drifting in the current with vivid tastes of the fishing markets. It can be said that the two opposing views with skyscraper buildings is a Shinagawa-style scenery. “Shinagawa-ura Totsuri ship” is a ward selected in the “Shinagawa Hyakkei”.

The Seiseki park is Tokaido 53 tsugi’s first stage the Shingawa camp’s headquarters track. As a resting area for the citizens, on this day many children from the nearby pre schools were playing.

Shinagawa shrine started in 1187 with the protection god for the above sea traffic safety and fulfillment of prayers; it first started from the Abo-kuni Susaki shrine’sAmenohiritomenomikoto. There is Jiyuminkenundo endeavor Itagaki Taisuke’s grave and number of chosen cultural fortunes.

Also when you get out of Shinagawa station South port exit, if you walk along the side of Takumi sea bass there is the Mitatebashi, the street that goes to the Tenoushuu sea bass is made into a promenade.

The Tenoushuu Aile is a compound facility/area that locates in the seaside. There is a collection of facilities centralized in the Seaford square. At night the night view is beautiful, and works perfectly for a date spot too.

The contemporary impression of Shinagawa is with its contemporary groups of buildings and it being a business men’s city; on the other hand it is the prosperous stage town in Tokaido 35 tsugi therefore still leaves a Edo period scene and is a city where you can sense its history. Enjoy the scenery that is only in Shinagawa.
