There is the Karuizawa Main Street or Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza within the distance of 25 minutes walk or 5 minutes drive from the station.

Along the 500 meters road from the rotary heading Kyu-Usui Touge, there are many souvenir shops and restaurants standing. Especially during the summer break and Golden Week, there are many many people.

As you walk a little from the rotary, you will find Mikado Coffee on your right. Even though it is a café, a mocha ice cream is popular and there are people making line to taste the famous ice cream.

It is the standard style to stroll around Kyu-Karuizawa with this mocha ice cream in hand.

Soon, you will see a wooden building. This is the Karuizawa Tourist Hall. It is a place you can get touring information and there are resting place as well.

Next to the hall is BOULANGERIE ASANOYA. It is a famous baker in Karuizawa where breads baked in brick kiln are served. There is a store in Tokyo as well, but since fermentation differs depending on the surrounding and nature, they say the taste is different. I recommend buying bread here and continue the walk.

Up the slope, you will find a building with exhibition of old pictures on your left. Here in Tsuchiya Karuizawa Picture Hall, there are pictures of Karuizawa back in time so you can see the town of Karuizawa back in the old days.
Once you reach Tsuchiya Picture Hall, the number of people decreases. You will soon reach the end of Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza.

Let’s go away from Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza for a little bit.

You will find a tennis court as you walk down a street next to Karuizawa Tourist Hall. It is Karuizawa Kai Tennis Court, a tennis club only for the member of the club. You have to join the club or come with a member in order to play here. This place is known as the place where the emperor and empress first met each other.

As you go on from the tennis court, you will bump into Karuizawa- ish scenery.

In 10 minutes walk, you will reach Manpei Hotel, long-established hotel in Karuizawa. I recommend eating breakfast once in your stay at Karuizawa.

There are still many noted places in Kyu-Karuizawa but I could not visit them in this stay so I will end my travel note here.
